How I Turned My Dog Into a Work of Art With ChatGPT (and Nearly Spit Out My Coffee!)
If you know a pet lover, you know the way to their heart is through their furry friend. Forget boring gifts—a Vincent van Gogh–style painting of their dog dressed as a king? That’s the kind of over-the-top, laugh-out-loud fun they’ll never forget.
Or maybe their vibe is a little more modern? Imagine their pup in Andy Warhol pop-art style, complete with bold colors and funky repetition.
Well, today I decided to test out what ChatGPT’s new art generation tools could do, and let me tell you… I was not ready for the hilarity that followed.
When I uploaded a photo of my little chihuahua, Van, things escalated quickly. There was a Renaissance masterpiece version with him looking like a royal ruler, a psychedelic Warhol set of portraits, and then—this is where I nearly spit my coffee—a punk rock version, complete with a wild neon hairdo and oversized sunglasses.
I’m genuinely considering printing a 16×20 canvas to hang on the wall and surprise my husband. He already thinks I take our dog a little too seriously. If he saw our pup immortalized as the King of the Renaissance? Let’s just say he might start to question my decorating abilities! 😂

How You Can Make Your Own Pet Masterpiece
If you’re just a little nutty like me—and love a good laugh or a quirky gift—here’s how you can make your own art using ChatGPT. It’s surprisingly easy and completely addictive.
Step 1: Upload your favorite pet photo.
Choose a photo with good lighting where you can clearly see their face. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but avoid blurry shots.
Step 2: Use a clear prompt.
When you describe what you want, here’s a simple structure that works great:
- “I want to use the likeness of this pet, not the exact image, and create art in this style…”
- If there’s something in the photo you don’t want (like a collar, leash, or background), add:
“…do not include the collar or background.”
I’ve listed the prompt I used next to each of the following photos:
Prompt: A punk style photograph. Give him spiked punk hair, bright colored glasses, a turtleneck and place him in front of a bright yellow, solid backdrop.
Prompt: in the style of a Renaissance Masterpiece – Timeless and regal. Classic and elegant, like something you’d see hanging in a museum.
Prompt: in the style of graffiti art. Replicate his image throughout the art.
Prompt: In the style of a Victorian oil painting and make him appear to be a king looking off.
Prompt: In the style of a charcoal sketch with a moody textured look.
Prompt: in the style of graffiti art.
Prompt: In a pop art style. Make it bold and playful. Bright colors, high contrast, and fun repetition, similar to Andy Warhol’s work.
Prompt: In the style of a watercolor painting. Gentle brushstrokes with flowing, blended colors, in a beach scene.
Prompt: in the style of a vintage travel poster. Include a Miami scene. Put the dog in a fedorah and a tropical shirt. Add his name in a vintage font at the top “Van”.
Prompt: in the style of a black and white portrait with high key studio lighting. Give him a regal appearance and have him wearing a velvet robe.
And there you have it! A few laughs, some wild pet portraits, and maybe even a new favorite piece of art for my wall. If you’ve ever wanted to see your dog as a king, a pop art icon, or a punk rock star, ChatGPT makes it easy and fun to try. With just a photo and a simple prompt, you can create one-of-a-kind images that are perfect for sharing, gifting, or just giggling at every time you walk by.

What is ChatGPT?
If you’re ready to try creating hilarious or heart-warming pet art of your own, the good news is that ChatGPT makes it super simple—even if you don’t consider yourself “techy.” You can use ChatGPT for free through a web browser or the ChatGPT mobile app. Free accounts currently allow you to create a few images each day (perfect for testing it out and making a couple of fun dog portraits). If you fall in love with it like I did, you can upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, which is $20 per month and gives you much higher limits so you can generate tons of images, upload more files, and enjoy faster, smoother performance. The subscription can be canceled anytime, so there’s no long-term commitment.
To get started, all you need to do is upload your pet’s photo, type a prompt describing the style you want—like “Renaissance painting,” “Andy Warhol pop art,” or even “punk rock superstar”—and ChatGPT will create a brand-new piece of art based on your pet’s likeness, not the exact photo. Whether you’re doing it just for laughs or planning to print a masterpiece for your wall, it’s an easy, fun way to bring your furry friend to life in art form.
