There’s a special kind of magic in making memories—not just keeping them safe in albums or on hard drives, but creating moments worth remembering. For those of us who treasure photos and the stories they tell, this goes hand-in-hand.
I have a tradition that I’ll admit I might love even more than Thanksgiving: our annual friends’ trip to the Florida Keys. Every summer, eight of us rent a house and embrace the laid-back Keys lifestyle for almost two weeks. We fish, we boat, we eat way too much—but most importantly, we soak up the joy of being together. These friends are so much more than friends; they’ve truly become family.
Over the years, this trip has become more than just a vacation. It’s a soul-filling retreat that we all look forward to all year long. And because it means so much to me, I’ve made it a little personal challenge to come up with simple, thoughtful ways to make each trip extra fun and memorable for our group. These small touches have become part of our story—things we still laugh about and look back on years later.
Today, I want to share some of my favorite ideas with you. Whether you’re planning a family reunion, a friends’ getaway, or even a weekend with neighbors, these are easy, meaningful ways to add a little extra magic to your next gathering. Because sometimes, the smallest details create the biggest memories.
This is my silly crew of friends! And here are just a few of those special things that we’ve done to make unique memories! And definitely read to the end. If you’re a fellow photo lover, you’ll appreciate the last one!

Letter Refrigerator Magnets
One year I brought a big set of letter magnets for the fridge, and it turned out to be one of the most fun and simple traditions we’ve ever started. Throughout the trip, everyone left funny notes, inside jokes, or surprise messages for each other. It became this ongoing game that kept us all laughing and it’s such an easy, inexpensive way to add a little extra joy to a shared space.
Personalized Travel Bingo
This might be my favorite new tradition! I used ChatGPT to create a custom bingo game just for our group. Instead of generic squares, every space included something that was totally us – like “caught a fish,” “made a pot of coffee,” or “put in the last piece of a puzzle.”
It turned into a hilarious challenge throughout the trip, with everyone trying to cross off their squares as the days went on. The best part? It didn’t take much effort to create, but it added a whole new level of fun and gave us even more memories (and laughs!) to talk about later.

Special Napkins With a Twist
Every year, I make sure to bring special napkins and they’ve become a staple for the trip. Funny sayings are always a hit, like this year’s, “I feel bad for people who don’t know us.” … Honestly though, I would love to take our level of joy bottle it up and ship it around!!
Some years I’ve gone the personalized route, like having napkins printed with a photo of our group, which was simple but so fun. But the most talked-about year was 2021, when I brought the “conversation napkins.” Each napkin had a different conversation starter printed on it, so you never knew what question you’d get until you grabbed one. Let’s just say… those sparked some unforgettable (and hilarious) late-night talks!
These napkins stay out in the living room so they’re easy to grab during movie night or while snacking on appetizers. It always surprises me how often they actually get used, proof that the smallest touches can make the biggest impact.

First to Worst
One of our most unexpectedly hilarious nights came from the game First to Worst. The idea is simple: everyone secretly ranks a list of random topics from the card deck… anything from “Olives” to “Taylor Swift” to “Diet Soda.” One person would secretly rank their feelings on 5 items from most to least favorite and we would all try to guess that ranking. There was a mix of friendly debates, laughter, and plenty of good-natured teasing.
Sweary Affirmation Cards
We love to keep the vibe positive on our trips… but with a little edge! This year, I brought along a set of sweary affirmation cards, and they were a hit. Imagine uplifting, encouraging messages… with a hilarious, not-always-PG twist.
These cards had everyone laughing and actually became a fun way to kick off our mornings or reset the mood after a long day in the sun. They’re definitely not for every crowd, but if your group doesn’t mind the occasional curse word served up in good fun, these cards are a perfect mix of motivation and mischief.
Balloon Lights (But Not Just for Balloons!)
Technically, these little gems are called balloon lights, but I’ve actually never put them inside balloons. Instead, they’ve become my go-to accessory for just about every occasion. These tiny LED lights are easy to pack, take up almost no space, and instantly add a warm, cozy glow wherever you use them.
On our group trips, they’re perfect for outdoor dinners on the patio or late-night drinks on the dock, setting just the right vibe without needing fancy décor. Every time I bring them out, someone asks where I got them and now all of my friends keep a stash on hand for their own celebrations.
They’re proof that sometimes the simplest, most affordable little things can create the biggest atmosphere upgrade.

The Giant Inflatable Duck
Yes, we’re an all-adult group but that doesn’t mean we have to show up to a sandbar party without a giant inflatable duck! This guy has been with us on so many trips that he’s basically become our group mascot. There’s just something about a big, goofy float that makes everyone smile and brings out the kid in even the most serious adult.
Our crew may be a bunch of empty nesters, but you’d never know it when “Duckie” is along for the ride. Whether he’s floating alongside the boat or making his grand entrance at a pool day, he’s guaranteed to steal the show.
If you really want to surprise your friends, bring along a giant inflatable bird (or any over-the-top float) for your next trip. It’s silly, it’s fun, and it’s the kind of thing that will instantly become part of your group’s story for years to come.
Customized Flags
Nothing says “this is OUR crew” like a set of custom flags! Amazon has tons of great options, but I’ve found that the mini flags are the most versatile. You can add a photo of your group or keep it simple with text, like “Flynn Family Party” or “Smith Crew 2025”
The secret to making them extra useful? Bring a few zip ties. That way, you can attach them anywhere– we’ve used ours on the golf cart, the boat, and even as a fun touch on a bicycle.
It’s such a small detail, but it makes your group easy to spot, adds personality to the trip, and makes for some really great photos. Plus, they’re inexpensive and easy to pack, so they’ve become a must-bring for every adventure.

Printed Photos & Trip Albums
For my fellow photo lovers, this one has been years in the making. Every year, we take hundreds of pictures on our trips, but like so many people, they’ve stayed stuck on our phones – until now.
A few weeks before this year’s trip, I printed a few hundred 4×6 photos from past years and surprised everyone with a simple photo album for each friend when we arrived. Each night, I took little magnets to add a batch of new photos to the refrigerator and told everyone, “Take your favorites and add them to your album – I’ll add more tomorrow.”
By the end of the trip, the albums were overflowing with memories and had sparked so many laughs and conversations about past adventures. Now my friends each have a tangible reminder of our time together, and I have my own album to flip through whenever I need a little pick-me-up.
Sometimes, the simplest traditions make the biggest impact and this one turned a bunch of forgotten phone photos into something real, lasting, and meaningful.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the magnets, the bingo cards, or even the giant inflatable duck (though he is pretty great!). It’s about the moments those little details create the inside jokes, the late-night conversations, and the shared memories that bring people closer together.
Whether it’s a family vacation, a weekend getaway, or a once-a-year friends’ trip like ours, adding a few thoughtful touches can turn a simple gathering into a story you’ll tell for years. And of course, don’t forget to capture those memories in photos because while the trip itself may end, the memories you preserve will keep bringing you joy long after the suitcases are unpacked.
So here’s to making—and keeping—memories, one small, meaningful tradition at a time.
