If you’re a Picture Person, chances are you’ve thought about buying a photo printer for your home. After all… You already have the photos. You already have the memories. Wouldn’t it be easier to just print them yourself?
Honestly? Sometimes yes. But sometimes… absolutely not. Let me explain.
On the last Great Photo Voyage photo group cruise, I packed up my Epson printer and brought it right onto the cruise ship with us. Every day, I printed photos from our scavenger hunts, color walks, classes at port. I printed both the pictures I took and the digital downloads from the ship’s photographer.

People would come back from dinner and find printed photos waiting in their cabins.
They loved it.
It was such a fun surprise and instantly made the experience feel more special and personal. We used them for decorating cabin doors, gifting to new friends on the trip, adding to journals, memory books, and scrapbooks before the vacation was even over.
For that purpose? At-home printing was absolutely perfect.
But I’ve also seen the other side of it.
After Hurricane Ian, I worked with families whose homes had flooded. The prints that came from at-home inkjet printers were often the first to be destroyed by water damage. The paper broke down quickly, the ink ran, and in many cases the image was completely lost.
And that’s when the difference really matters.
👍 Pros of Printing Photos at Home
- Instant gratification
You can print your vacation photos while you’re still on vacation (like we did on the cruise!) - Perfect for gifting
Great for sharing snapshots with friends and family right away. - Decorations for events or travel
Add photos to cabin doors, graduation boards, celebrations of life, or family reunions. - Scrapbooking & journaling
Ideal for memory keeping projects that don’t require archival longevity. - Creative projects
Vision boards, photo walls, DIY crafts, and classroom or office displays. - Daily or weekly documentation
Fun for short-term storytelling.
👎 Cons of Printing Photos at Home
- Not designed for long-term preservation
Inkjet prints are vulnerable to water damage, humidity, and environmental changes. - More likely to fade over time
Especially if displayed in sunlight or stored in non-archival conditions. - Paper quality matters (and it adds up)
Archival-quality paper and ink cartridges are expensive. - Time-consuming
Selecting paper, managing ink levels, loading trays, adjusting settings — it’s a process. - Not always cheaper
Between paper, ink, maintenance, and time, the cost per print often rivals professional labs. - Not ideal for heirloom photos
If you want your grandchildren to someday hold this picture, this isn’t the best method.
So… When Should You Print at Home?
At-home printing is great for:
- Instant vacation memories
- Scrapbooks
- Photo gifts
- Party décor
- Creative projects
- Everyday storytelling
It’s a short-term joy solution, not a long-term preservation plan.
When Should You Use a Professional Lab?
If you have:
- A family portrait
- Wedding photos
- Baby pictures
- An old scanned print
- A once-in-a-lifetime trip
- Any image you hope will be handed down someday
You’ll want to use a professional photo lab that uses traditional photographic printing methods.
Those prints are:
- Water resistant
- Less likely to fade
- Chemically processed for longevity
- Made to last for decades (or longer)
What I Personally Do
I print my photos every month. But I don’t print them at home.
In the end, I found it wasn’t actually cheaper and it definitely took more time. Ordering prints from a lab through an app like Persnickety Prints can be done from anywhere, anytime… without worrying about ink levels, paper types, or whether the prints will last. And in the end you have a much higher quality print.
Because when it comes to the photos that matter most, convenience is nice. But longevity is everything.
