Don’t Let the Stories Die With You: The Treasure We Found in a Box of Old Photos

thekristak, June 26, 2025December 23, 2025

Over the weekend, my husband and I opened a box we’ve been meaning to go through for a few months. It was filled with memories that belonged to his late mother. Most of her photos had already digitized and shared with the family when she was still with us. But tucked inside, nearly forgotten, was something remarkable.

We found three 8×10 photographs. One was a formal military portrait of my husband’s father, taken while he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. The other two were aerial views of a beach and military base in Iwo Jima, Japan – all were images that told a quiet, powerful story of place and time.

My husband recognized them instantly. These were the same photographs his father had once shown him, sparking stories he still remembered. Stories of moments of bravery and camaraderie told through the eyes of someone who lived it. As my husband began retelling those stories to me, something hit me hard.

What happens to those stories when my husband can no longer tell them?

Will his father’s legacy fade? Will his voice – the one that brought those photos to life be silenced forever?

Why don’t we think about that more? Why do we wait until memories are slipping away to realize how fragile they really are?

That’s when I looked at him and said, “Write this down.”
We scanned the photographs to preserve them, and my husband began carefully penciling out what he remembered – all the details that only he could recall his father sharing with him.

He plans to share those stories with our kids and grandkids, hoping that seeing the images and reading the words will spark new conversations, just like the ones he had with his father.

Because the value of the photo is lost when the story that goes with it is gone.

If you’re holding stories in your mind, especially ones that were handed to you by loved ones who are now gone, it’s time to put them on paper. Pair them with the photos. Make them last.

Here are 7 tips to help you preserve and share your family stories:

  1. Start with one photo – Pick an image that stirs a memory. Focus on just that one to avoid overwhelm.
  2. Write in your own voice – It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just be real. Use your words, your way.
  3. Include names, places, and dates – Even if you’re not sure of the exact details, noting what you do know can be a valuable clue for future generations.
  4. Use photo-safe note cards – You can jot your notes on a note card or paper or even save them in digital form alongside the scan.
  5. Record yourself telling the story – If writing feels hard, record a voice memo or video. Your voice telling the story is a gift in itself.
  6. Digitize and organize – Scan the photo and store it with the written or recorded story. I always suggest organizing photos by year.
  7. Share with your family now – Don’t wait for “someday.” Send a copy to relatives, make a family memory book, or create a private online archive.

Your memories are more than stories they are the threads that connect generations. Don’t let them fade into silence.

Step one is always to get a digital copy of those special photos. I offer a course on how to easily accomplish that! Check out the Save Your Story digital course at this link.
