Why Are My Scanned Photos Blurry? (And How to Fix It!)

thekristak, July 20, 2025December 23, 2025

If you’re taking the time to scan old photos, first of all, that’s amazing! You’re preserving memories that will last for generations. But how frustrating is it when you finish scanning only to realize the images look blurry, hazy, or out of focus?

Don’t give up on your photo project just yet! Chances are, there’s a simple fix that will get your scans looking sharp and clear. Here’s a quick guide to help you figure out why your scanned photos are blurry and, most importantly, how to fix the problem.

🔍 1. Check for Dust or Smudges on the Scanner Glass

A super common cause of blurry scanned images is dust, fingerprints, or smudges on the scanner glass. Even tiny particles can create a foggy, dull look.

How to fix it:

  • Use a microfiber cloth
  • Wipe the glass gently before you scan old photographs.

⚙ 2. Make Sure You’re Using the Right DPI (Resolution)

If you’re wondering what DPI to scan photos at, this matters! Scanning at too low a resolution can make images look pixelated or soft.

How to fix it:

  • For prints, scan at at least 300DPI I typically suggest 600 DPI.
  • For small photos you want to enlarge, use the higher end (600 or higher DPI or more).
  • For slides or negatives, go even higher, at least 2400 DPI.

📎 3. Ensure the Photo Lies Flat on the Scanner

If your photo is curled or lifting off the scanner bed, part of it will scan out of focus.

How to fix it:

  • Flatten curled photos overnight under heavy books.
  • Place a clean, clear sheet (like acetate) over the photo to hold it down gently.

🖨 4. Check Your Scanner Quality

Some older or budget scanners just can’t produce sharp results, or the scanner mechanism might be wearing out.

How to fix it:

  • Look up reviews for your scanner model.
  • If others report blurry scans, consider upgrading to a photo-quality scanner like the Epson FastFoto

💾 5. Review File Format and Compression Settings

Even if you scan correctly, saving images wrong can ruin detail.

How to fix it:

  • Save as TIFF or high-quality JPEG.
  • Check your scanning software settings for image quality or compression levels.

🔧 6. Watch for Movement (If Using a Feed-Through Scanner)

If you’re using a sheet-feed photo scanner, the photo might shift or the rollers might pull unevenly.

How to fix it:

  • Make sure photos are clean, with no sticky spots.
  • Clean scanner rollers if needed.
  • Double-check that you’re using the right type of scanner for fragile prints.

💡 Pro Tip:

Always scan one test photo first, zoom in to 100%, and check the sharpness before doing a big batch!
