Start a family heritage folder to collect and organize your families most treasured photographs!
Before you start, you’ll need to have a digital scan of all of those print pictures. I’ve included a few links to my past posts that go into more detail on those steps. You can check those out at the following links.
Once you have a digital scan, you can collect the most important photographs in a folder on your computer. A neatly collected and organized family photo history, is easy to share with each family member. You can even give everyone their own custom flash drive filled with those photos.
This is how to accomplish that!
Start a new folder on your computer. Label it Heritage Folder or Family History.
Inside of that folder you can create sub-folders. Those can be labled by person or family name. You’ll want to go back as far as you have photographs for. Think even great, great grandma!
As you inherit or come across old photographs, add them to your collection. Visiting a relative? Ask them about their photographs. You may be surprised that they have that gem of a photo of a great, great relative.
- TIP – download the Photomyne App for scanning photographs using your phone. This is really great if you are visiting relatives and you want a digital copy of a print that they have.
Here is what you could collect in that folder:
I think of this as the most special highlights. Think baby photographs, graduations, weddings…. Portraits of each family member. While that may be all there is from many years back, in more recent times that will take a little more thought. The idea is to narrow the pictures down to an easy, manageable story.
Here is how you can share that folder:
Do a shared folder in Google Photos or Amazon Photos.
Or make it extra special and add those pictures to a customized flash drive. Last year I passed out these flash drives to everyone in our family. It was a nice way to give the family heritage pictures an extra special presentation!
