If you know me well, you know I’ve spent more than 30 years as a professional photographer… which means I’ve spent a LOT of time around kids holding cameras, striking poses, and giggling at my silly noises to make them smile. 😂
But over the past few years, something kept surprising me:
More and more little kiddos have never seen a “real” camera before.
They point to my Canon like it’s some kind of magical unicorn. 🦄📷
We all use our phones so much now that the idea of a camera you hold with two hands — one with a lens that goes click! — feels like something from long ago.
And honestly?
I think we lose a little something when kids don’t get to experience that magic too. That is what I fell in love with many (many, many) years ago and I bet many of you did too!
✨ The Heart Behind “Unlikely Photographers”
That’s how Unlikely Photographers was born — a whimsical animal photography coloring book to help kids see picture-taking in a whole new (and old!) way.
Inside are:
- Raccoons snapping selfies 🤳🦝
- Lizards behind the lens 🦎📸
- Bunnies finding the perfect angle 🐰✨
Silly? Yes.
Completely on-brand for me? Also yes. 😄
But there’s a deeper purpose, too:
I wanted kids to feel how special being photographed really is.
To understand that each picture we take becomes a memory we get to keep.
To celebrate creativity, storytelling, and those little moments worth remembering.
And all of that is true no matter what kind of camera you use (from phone camera to professional gear!)
I made this book first for my photography clients’ kids — something fun and meaningful to keep them engaged in the joy of picture-taking.
Then parents started saying…
“You should share this. All kids would LOVE this.”
So here we are.
Maybe the world does need a camera-loving coloring book! 🎉
