I’ll never forget the heartbreak I witnessed after Hurricane Ian. As the storm passed and the floodwaters receded, people emerged to homes that were damaged or destroyed but what I remember most in those next few days were the tearful stories about the photos that were lost.
I walked through neighborhoods, trying to help salvage what I could. Some waterlogged photos could be air-dried, washed and saved. Others were too damaged, their precious images blurred and scratched. Families were devastated not just by the physical losses, but by the memories. Weddings, childhood moments, grandparents long gone… that seemed washed away forever.
That experience lit a fire in me. I made it my mission to help people protect their photos before disaster strikes. Because while we can’t stop storms, fires, accidents (or even just the effects of time), we can take steps to keep our memories safe now.
If you want to make sure your most cherished photos survive no matter what comes your way, here’s my list of pro tips for safe photo storage:
1️⃣ Digitize Your Photos
The #1 most important thing you can do is digitize your print photos. Scanning them turns one fragile paper copy into a digital file that can be duplicated, backed up, and protected. You don’t need to scan every snapshot start with your most meaningful albums and family archives.
Pro tip: Use a good-quality scanner like the Epson FastFoto or a photo scanning service like Clicking with Kristen or Pixologie for the best results, especially for old prints or delicate originals.
2️⃣ Keep Multiple Copies in Different Places
Once your photos are digitized, don’t store them in just one place.
- Keep copies on an external hard drive or computer.
- Back them up to a cloud storage service (like Google Photos, iCloud, or Amazon Photos).
- If possible, store a backup drive at a trusted friend or family member’s home, or in a secure location outside your home.
This protects you in case of theft, fire, or natural disaster at one location.
3️⃣ Organize Ahead of Time
Go through your photo collection now, before an emergency and separate out your most valuable prints. Maybe it’s your grandparents’ wedding portrait, baby photos, or a cherished vacation album.
Have these irreplaceable prints stored in a spot that’s easy to grab if you need to evacuate quickly. But remember, in a real emergency you won’t have time to save everything that’s why digitizing is the safety net that protects your full collection.
4️⃣ Use Archival Storage for Prints
For the prints you keep, store them safely. Use acid-free boxes, photo-safe sleeves, or albums to reduce the risk of damage from humidity, heat, and light. Avoid storing photos in basements or attics, which are prone to moisture and temperature swings.
5️⃣ Check Your System Regularly
Every few months, do a quick check:
- Are your backups up to date?
- Are your cloud services working?
- Are your printed photos stored safely?
A a few minutes of maintenance goes a long way toward protecting your memories for decades to come.
