Photographs and the holidays go hand in hand.
As a professional photographer this time of year is, well, messy. It’s the only time when everyone needs their pictures immediately. I once had a fellow photographer tell me that December is that one time of year when she has the honor of capturing beautiful memories for countless families all while sacrificing her own holiday memories to do so.
After 25 years as a professional photographer I have figured out how to balance that. I now take a very limited number of clients this time of year and I’ve learned as hard as it is to do, “no” sometimes has to be the answer. That being said, I do still have hundreds… Maybe thousands…. Of holiday photo shoots under my belt.
Here are a few of my holiday photo tips that you can apply to your family picture taking this holiday season too!
1. I’ve found kiddos tend to start strong and then get bored with the photo mission. If you’re taking posed pictures of the kids or grandkids start with the pictures that are most important to you. Is the group of everyone together the most important? Start with that photo.
2. Set expectations. Do you have the entire family coming for dinner? Let them know ahead of time you would like to gather for a group photo. I have gotten my share of eye rolls from my own crew when I have said “let’s take a family picture” but when they know to expect it they are much more down for the pix.
3. If you print your phone photos, you know, a photo taken in a dark room might look okay on your phone but it will print terrible. When you take pictures this holiday season use bright window lighting and go outdoors if possible. That lighting will make for a much better and printable photo.
4. Candid moments will always be my favorites. Don’t forget to snap a few moments of everyone doing their thing and enjoying the season.
5. Be in the photos. Make sure there is a photo of you and your own siblings, your parents/grandparents, as well as you with the kids. Don’t forget you have a self timer on your phone!

Here is a family photo of my crew together at Thanksgiving. Just a cell phone picture and a friend behind the lens, but definitely one I will cherish for years to come!
