It’s definitely important to get those phone photographs backed up! I suggest keeping them in multiple places. One good option is a cloud service like Amazon Photos or Dropbox. You should also keep a local copy too (one where the pictures are stored with you). I always suggest an external desktop hard drive as the fastest, safest and most reliable place, however a portable hard drive or flash drive will work too.
The best method to get those phone photographs backed up to that location is by using your computer. You can simply plug your phone into your computer along with that external hard drive or flash drive and copy the pictures over. However, what do you do if you don’t have a computer? Or what if you are on the go and want to back up your photographs or even share them with another person while you’re not at home.
Luckily there are a few gadgets that will make moving pictures off of your phone a piece of cake! This USB Adapter will do the trick. You can plug your own flash drive into it and it will allow you to copy pictures from your phone to that USB flash drive.
If you are looking for an all in one solution check out the Sandisk iXpand Flash Drive Go.
This flash drive will plug directly into your phone. It will then prompt you to download the Sandisk iXpand app. Through that app you can then select the photographs that you wish to copy. It will then ask you if you wish to delete those pictures off of your phone. Remember, do not delete them off of your phone until you have them stored in more than one place! All flash drives are fragile and shouldn’t be relied on as the sole location of your photographs.
When you do have access to a computer you can then plug that flash drive in to the USB port and open those photographs up on your computer too.
There are also solutions for USB-C (Android phones and iPhone 15/16) Check out these similar option! And always double check that it is compatible with your device.
And one more option!
This external hard drive will connect to your phone and also to a computer. It’s just one more method to get those pictures from your phone to another location.
I can’t stress enough, do not rely on any flash drive alone to store your pictures. They are all fragile and can easily break. While these are great methods to get pictures to a secondary location, make sure you are also backing them up to a place like Amazon Photos, Google Photos or Dropbox.
NOTE: iCloud is a mirror of what is on your phone. If you delete the photographs off of your phone they will also delete out of iCloud. It is very important that you select an alternative like Amazon Photos where it will continue to store your pictures even if you delete them off of your phone.

This process will drain your battery quickly, so you may want to plug it in with your phone charger. I have spoken with people who said theirs wouldn’t work until they plugged it in. I haven’t needed to, but just FYI it is possible since it does take some power to do this.
And best flash drive…. I’m working on an entire post that will compare options. Watch for that! I would use one that has a fast write time if you are using it to move pictures.
With over 1000+ photos from iPhone and IPad is an external drive the best for so many photos and small videos? How do you know what will work as far as connecting?
Yes. I definitely suggest a desktop external hard drive as a great place to store your pictures. You want to make sure and get one that is formatted for (or in other words compatible with) Mac or PC, but otherwise it should just plug in and work easily to start adding those photographs to it.
