I’ll always suggest purchasing the Epson FastFoto scanner to make getting digital copies of old print photographs quick and easy. However, purchasing that scanner requires an investment. If you are on board and agree, it’s time to start scanning those pictures, BUT not ready to plunk down that much cash, here are a few ways to get the job done on a budget.
- Find a FREE scanning location. Check out the FamilySearch Center website. They have locations all over the country. You take your photographs into their location and can use their scanners for free. The FamilySearch Center is also connected with many libraries, however if yours isn’t listed on their website, it still may be another place to check into for free scanning. Always check that your location has the Epson FastFoto scanner (not a flatbed scanner).
- Download an app like Photomyne. This will allow you to get a scan with your phone. This app offers the option to scan multiple pictures at the same time, however if you want the best quality you need to scan one at a time. It is also important that you are working in good lighting. Overall the quality will be a little less than a desktop scanner and it does take some time, but it is a great alternative to an expensive scanner. *If you need more help check out this post about how to get a good quality scan using Photomyne*
- Use a flatbed scanner. The reason I typically advise against this isn’t due to quality, it’s simply due to the time it takes. However, if you have time and patience, you can get the job done with a flatbed scanner. These scanners require that you put one photo in, scan, remove the photo, repeat. You could possibly scan 2 or 3 pictures per minute that way. With the feeder on the Epson FastFoto you can scan 30 or more per minute. So it literally is just a time factor. If you have a small group of pictures, this might not be an issue, however when you have thousands of pictures it will require a time investment.
- Go in on the Epson FastFoto with a friend. Why not share the benefits and split the cost!

I love this scanner because it has a photo feeder. It allows you to scan stacks of photographs at one a time. I have found it to be the quickest and easiest way to get digital copies of old photographs and to get photo organized!
