Great Photo Voyage 2027

Why the Great Photo Voyage Is More Than Just a Cruise for Picture People

If you aren’t familiar with the Great Photo Voyage yet, here’s the quick version:

The Great Photo Voyage is a relaxed, community-focused photography cruise created for people who love pictures, memory keeping, storytelling, and documenting life. It’s part photo workshop, part photography meetup, part creative retreat, and part vacation.

Hosted by professional photographers and photo educators Krista K (that’s me!) and Mollie Bartelt, this experience combines photo walks, classroom-style learning, casual conversations, and lots of time to simply enjoy being around other people who understand why photographs matter so much.

This is Mollie and me! We actually met because I stumbled across her YouTube channel on photo organizing. We connected after that and have been photo loving, picture person friends ever since.

Whether you take pictures with your phone or travel with a camera bag full of gear, this trip is designed to help you enjoy photography more, feel inspired again, and finally get more control over your growing photo collection.

This week, I asked if anyone had questions and got several questions about the trip. I thought it would be helpful to answer them here because chances are, if you’ve been considering joining us, you may be wondering the same things too.

What Cruise Line Is the Great Photo Voyage On?

The Great Photo Voyage takes place aboard Celebrity Beyond, one of the newest ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. The 7-night Caribbean cruise departs from Fort Lauderdale and includes ports like Nassau, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman.

The combination of sea days, beautiful ports, photography walks, and relaxed educational sessions makes it ideal for people looking for a photography cruise, photo retreat, or creative travel experience.

Is It Better to Come Alone or Bring a Plus One?

That’s honestly a hard question to answer because both worked out really well on the last trip.

I really enjoyed getting to know the solo travelers on the last Great Photo Voyage. Mollie and I welcome spending additional time together outside of the organized activities, so nobody ever felt “alone”. The random time together became one of the most fun parts of the experience. We had breakfasts together, went to shows, explored the ship, and even had plenty of “late night buffet” moments… or as we started calling it, “Dinner #2.”

The rest of the group mixed naturally between group time and independent time. Some people explored on their own occasionally, while others stayed together most of the trip.

One woman brought her husband, even though he wasn’t participating in the photography portion of the cruise. He still joined us for photo walks, meals, and hanging out around the ship — and he was a wonderful addition to the party. That said, he also had to tolerate a LOT of photo talk and stopping for pictures!

So I think bringing a non-picture-person plus one can absolutely work… as long as they genuinely enjoy being around someone who loves photography and memories as much as you do.

If they get frustrated by constant pictures, photo conversations, or stopping to admire beautiful light, they may not enjoy it quite as much.

I’ve never cruised before. Will it be awkward since I don’t know anyone else?

Not at all.

Most everyone on the last cruise met for the first time onboard. And there were first time cruisers with us too.

And honestly? I think there’s something about people who care deeply about memories, nostalgia, and photographs that makes connection happen quickly. We all clicked (no pun intended!) almost immediately.

There’s already a built-in topic everyone loves talking about: pictures.

From there, conversations naturally expand into family stories, travel, creativity, organizing photos, camera gear, old memories, and life in general.

The atmosphere felt much more like traveling with old friends than attending a formal photography conference.

What If I’ve Already Organized My Photos?

You will still absolutely learn new things.

Technology changes constantly. New apps appear. Backup systems improve. AI tools evolve. Better workflows develop.

Even people who already felt fairly organized walked away with new ideas, better systems, and easier ways to manage their digital photos.

The classroom sessions are designed to help people simplify photo organization, improve backup systems, learn modern tools, and feel more confident managing both old and new pictures.

And because the group is small, there’s also plenty of time for personal conversations and specific questions related to your own photo situation. On this last cruise those questions ranged from “what are the best ways to retouch a photo?” to “how much should I be spending on cloud service for storing digital photos?” It was those unique questions that sparked entirely unplanned conversations that I know were also super helpful for everyone.

What Kind of Camera Do Most People Bring?

Everything.

And that’s one of the best parts of this trip.

Some people primarily used their phones for photography. Others brought cameras, lenses, and full camera bags.

There was zero judgment either way.

The Great Photo Voyage is not about showing off equipment or competing over gear. It’s about enjoying photography, seeing the world differently, and documenting meaningful moments.

Whether you love iPhone photography, travel photography, family memory keeping, or professional photography gear, you’ll fit right in.

I’m Not Very Tech Savvy. Will I Still Learn How to Manage My Phone Photos?

Absolutely.

In fact, many people join specifically because they feel overwhelmed by the thousands of photos on their phones.

The classroom time covers practical ways to organize digital photos, back up pictures safely, and create systems that are realistic to maintain in everyday life.

But honestly, some of the best help happens outside the classroom.

Because the group is small and relaxed, there’s lots of time for one-on-one conversations where we can talk through your specific issues and make sure the steps actually feel manageable for you.

No complicated tech language. No judgment. Just practical help.

What Are the Days Actually Like?

The days are structured enough to feel purposeful, but relaxed enough to still feel like a real vacation.

Typically, port days begin with a photo walk where we explore, take pictures, and enjoy seeing a new place together.

Sea days usually include classroom-style sessions focused on photo organization, memory keeping, backups and digital workflow.

The rest of the day is flexible.

You can relax by the pool, explore the ship, join activities, edit photos, nap, eat dessert twice, or simply spend time talking with other people who love pictures as much as you do.

There are also some very picture person games that happen throughout the week. Like the photo scavenger hunt which got pretty competitive!

And also throughout the trip, you’ll always have the option to join Mollie and me for meals, shows, activities, or just casual conversations around the ship.

Some of the best memories from the last cruise happened during those completely unplanned moments.
