CES 2026 from a Picture Person

CES Through A Picture Persons Eyes

thekristak, January 12, 2026January 12, 2026

I just returned from Las Vegas where I attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). CES is one of the worlds biggest technology conventions. So yes, as you many have guessed, there were robots, jaw-dropping AI demos, and technology that felt like it belonged in the future. There were even fun photo related things, like a bird feeder that captures a perfect photo of a hummingbird mid-flight and a door security system with a camera that recognizes you and automatically unlocks the door when you approach! Incredible.

But that wasn’t why I was there.

I Was There with a Purpose

While I love talking about photos and building a community around them, the foundation of my work runs much deeper than enjoying cool tech and chatting with Picture People about how much I love photos (although that might be my favorite part!).

This all started because there isn’t enough awareness around keeping photos safe.

I believe strongly that the world needs a photo-saving advocate. Someone to speak for everyday people who love their photos deeply, but feel overwhelmed, confused, or intimidated by the technology meant to protect them.

That belief is why my little Krista K online world exists.

So when I walked into CES this year, I wasn’t there to be dazzled. I was there to look for answers and to understand why better solutions for Picture People still don’t exist at scale.

The Gaps Are Still Shockingly Clear

1. Digitizing print photos is still either expensive or painfully slow

For a world overflowing with shoeboxes, albums, and inherited photo collections, the scanner market is oddly stagnant.

Why does the Epson FastFoto still have virtually no real competition?

There should be more innovation here. More affordable, faster, simpler options designed for families not institutions.

2. Keeping digital photos safe is still too complicated

Most backup solutions are built with businesses and IT departments in mind.

They are not built for an everyday grandma in Scranton who simply wants to keep the memories of her travels and grandkids safe.

That mismatch matters.

This Shouldn’t Be a Niche Problem

There are billions of people taking photos on their phones every single day.

Yet the tools designed to protect those photos rarely feel like they were made for those people.

From what I see, there is a massive disconnect between tech companies and a huge segment of the population.

Most people:

  • Don’t fully understand why backing up photos matters
  • Feel intimidated by the process
  • Avoid taking action because it feels too complicated
  • Don’t even recognize terms like digitize

And that confusion is reinforced by the way companies talk about photo storage.

The Industry Language Is the Problem

At CES, I sat through presentations from major brands and kept hearing the same phrases:

  • Digital assets
  • Content
  • Data management

And every time, I thought the same thing:

Who is this actually for?

Sure, an influencer has digital assets and content.

But the people I talk to every day don’t.

They have family memories.
They have personal photo collections.
They have heritage, and history.
They have moments where time stood still, captured so a feeling could live on.

That is not a digital asset to the people I talk to.

That is a treasure.

And until the industry recognizes that distinction, everyday people will continue to feel excluded.

Reframing the Conversation Changes Everything

When people hear phrases like:

  • High-speed data transfer
  • AES hardware encryption
  • Advanced file management

They check out.

They assume:

“This isn’t for me.”

But when the conversation shifts to:

  • Photo preservation
  • Digital memories
  • Keeping family stories safe

People lean in.

The lack of this emotional framing is a solid reason why people don’t back up their photos at all.

The Data-Loss Blind Spot

Most people don’t believe their personal data is at risk… until they experience a loss. I have seen this first hand.

This is not because photos don’t matter to them. I believe it’s because the tools and messaging don’t feel accessible. Tech companies unintentionally alienate the casual user who just wants a simple, reliable digital photo album.

And that leaves millions of people vulnerable.

My Community Confirms This

I recently ran a poll on Instagram.

This audience already identifies as Picture People. They care about photos. They value preservation. If anyone should feel confident about backups, it’s them.

Here’s what they told me:

  • 12% feel confident backing up their digital photos
  • 25% understand backups but are inconsistent
  • 63% are unsure how or completely confused

This isn’t a fringe issue. This is a mass-market problem.

Picture People Are Not Invisible

When I talk with my community, we never talk about digital assets.

We talk about:

  • Stories
  • People
  • Moments
  • Legacy

What’s missing isn’t just better technology.

It’s clear guidance, simpler processes, and products designed around how people actually live.

I’m not saying every storage company is failing. I am saying there is enormous room to do better.

One Digital Photo Storage Win

One of the most meaningful conversations I had at CES was with a company called Piodata.

What stood out wasn’t flashy specs, it was the origin story behind one of their products.

One of their portable phone photo backup devices exists because the founder’s mom struggled to back up her own photos.

That matters.

Their iXflash Cube attaches directly to a phone charger. Every night, when you plug your phone in, your photos automatically back up.

No remembering to do it. No technical overwhelm. Once set up, it preserves full file sizes and keeps Live Photos as Live Photos too.

I think that is a great concept and I’m excited to test it myself.

My CES Takeaway

CES was an incredible experience. I learned a lot, made meaningful connections, and had thoughtful conversations with scanner manufacturers and storage companies.

And I advocated for Picture People.

Because we are not a niche audience. We are not invisible. We are a massive, emotionally driven market waiting to be served better.

The company that finally bridges the gap between memory and technology won’t just build better products. They’ll change how people protect their lives.
