My background isn’t in photo organizing. It isn’t in preservation or cloud storage or backing up digital files. I didn’t go to school for archiving or specialize in disaster recovery. I just happened to pick up a few tools and tricks over the years from being a professional photographer for more than three decades.
Honestly? I never intended to help people with their personal photo collections. I didn’t even know that was a thing. I didn’t know “photo organizer” was a profession. I didn’t know how many people were silently overwhelmed by the clutter of digital images, shoe boxes of prints, or the looming threat of losing it all in an instant.
Then everything changed.
It took one tragic weather event to shake me awake and to show me just how fragile our most treasured memories really are. I saw firsthand what it looks like when water takes over homes, taking not just belongings, but lifetimes of moments. I witnessed how heartbreaking it is when family photos are ruined beyond repair. And I felt how quickly grief multiplies when those images and their stories are just gone.
That storm changed everything for me.
It became my mission to help people before disaster strikes. To raise the flag before it’s too late. To help families everywhere protect the moments that matter most. And while my heart has grown stronger in its resolve, it has also grown heavier. Now, whenever I see another storm on the news… another fire, another flood… I feel it all over again. I remember 2022. I remember my neighbors. I remember the terror.
That’s why I keep sharing. That’s why I keep teaching. That’s why I created tools to make it easier, because I don’t want your photos to be the thing you regret not saving.
So today, I’m asking you to pause and think:
If something happened tomorrow, would your photos survive?
Would your kids have baby pictures to look back on?
Would your parents’ wedding album still be around?
Would the photos that tell your story make it through a flood?
If the answer is I’m not sure, here are a few simple tips to get started:
5 Ways to Start Protecting Your Photos Today
- Back up digital photos to at least two places
Use an external hard drive and a cloud service like Google Photos or Amazon Photos. - Digitize your most precious prints
Scan older photos, albums, and memorabilia. Start with the irreplaceable ones – family history, milestones, and one-of-a-kind snapshots. - Store physical prints in waterproof, fire-safe containers
Shoe boxes and plastic bins won’t cut it for the most valuable prints. Your pictures have a better shot in a better container, however it’s important to note that in some circumstances there isn’t a container safe enough. You MUST get that digital copy of the memory. - Label and organize
Even basic labeling like names and dates will make a huge difference for future generations. Photos have no value if we don’t know what or who they are of. - Don’t wait
Disaster doesn’t come with a warning. Taking even one step today is better than none at all.
