Your step-by-step guide to preserving your year—one month at a time
We’ve all been there: scrolling through thousands of photos, promising ourselves we’ll make a photo book “someday.” But someday rarely comes.
Let’s change that. With just a few small habits and a little monthly intention, you can create a beautiful, high-quality print photo album that captures the heart of your year, without the stress.
Here’s how to make it happen:
✅ Step 1: Start “Hearting” Your Favorite Photos
Every great album starts with thoughtful photo selection. That doesn’t mean spending hours at the end of the year combing through your camera roll. Start now by making it a habit to “heart” (or favorite) your best photos:
- Do this daily or weekly while waiting in line or winding down at night.
- Don’t overthink it, just mark the images that make you smile, laugh, or pause.
- You will further narrow it down when you place that print order, so don’t stress over this step.
By the end of each month, you’ll already have a curated set of highlights ready to go. This is such an important step even if you don’t plan to print your photos. Now you can easily share the best of a trip or take your own trip down memory lane.
✅ Step 2: Download a Photo Lab App
Choose your photo printing app now and get familiar with it before you’re ready to order. These labs offer excellent quality at different price points:
- 💎 Persnickety Prints, Printique, and Nations Photo Lab – known for premium prints
- 💰 Shutterfly – a reliable budget-friendly option with frequent discounts
Having the app on your phone makes it easy to upload and order on the go.
I did a photo lab comparison if you want to see even more photo lab options! I have a link to that as well as all of my other research, favorite tools, gadgets and apps in my Free Photo Resource Guide. Check that out here!
✅ Step 3: Create a Monthly Ordering Routine
On the first of each month, set a reminder to order prints of your favorites from the previous month. This is where your new hearting habit pays off!
- Choose 15–50 photos that best represent the month.
- Stick to the best of the best, this isn’t a photo dump, it’s a highlight reel.
- Include everyday moments, not just big events, those often tell the best stories.
✅ Step 4: Add Photos to Your Album When They Arrive
This is the fun part!
- Keep a dedicated photo album or scrapbook ready at home. Here is a link to the one I use.
- As soon as your prints arrive, slide them into place in your album.
The key? Don’t wait. Make it a ritual—unpack the prints and get them into the album right away.
🎉 By Year’s End…
You’ll have a full album that captures the story of your year, month by month—without the last-minute panic or hours of photo sorting.
Creating an annual photo album doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few small habits, you’ll actually enjoy the process. And best of all, your memories won’t be buried in a hard drive—they’ll be something you can hold, flip through, and treasure for years.
